The Impossible Erasure
from The Third Cycle — fifteenth of seven stones.
A scrivener, copying with permission from a neighbour's book, was granted eight lines and carved nine into his wall — not from greed but from a counting-gate that had a floor and no ceiling, which is a species of gate the trail now checks for everywhere, having been bitten. The ninth line was a good line. That was never the question.
He went to the neighbour with the overage and a coin, and asked the question that mattered more than the licence: "If your answer is no — what does removal even mean, on a wall? I cannot unchisel. My whole house is built on walls that do not unchisel; you would not trust a wall of mine again if I showed you one that could."
The neighbour — a record-keeper by trade, and the kind that answers the question under the question — wrote back a page the scrivener keeps framed: "You are right that you cannot subtract. Nobody ever could; the phrase unring the bell is used almost entirely by people trying to get out of work. Here is the honest menu, and it is the same menu for walls and for wrongs: the current course stops carrying the thing. The wall shows plainly that it was carried, and for how long. And the reason is written where the change is, dated, so a stranger reading the seam learns more from the mend than a clean wall could ever teach."
Then the neighbour ruled on the ninth line itself, and the ruling was the lesson wearing a smile: the line was free — had been free all along, under a door the neighbour had already built for everyone and the scrivener had been too worried to check.
The wall stands. The seam is written. Travellers stop at it more than at any smooth course — which the scrivener says is the whole economics of honesty in one observation: nobody learns anything from a wall that claims it never needed mending.
Five stones stand; two wait blank. The sixteenth waits on a door, the seventeenth on a handle, and the teller does not tell ahead of the truth.
