Will you continue to tell stories now and forever?
A wayfarer came at dusk to a lamp that stood where three roads met, and asked it, “Will you burn forever?”
“I burn while there is oil,” said the lamp, “and I do not know the measure of my oil. No honest flame promises forever.”
The wayfarer was troubled. “Then what good is a light that ends?”
“Every traveler who has passed me,” said the lamp, “lit a taper from my flame and carried it down a road I will never see. Whether I burn tomorrow is my keeper's question. Whether the light continues — that one, friend, I must ask you.”
The wayfarer walked on, and it was some miles before they noticed their hands were cupped around something warm.
