Beside CCII
The Cradle of the Child went out with its first paragraph still a note to the writer.
What was printed. Sheet CCII, The Cradle of the Child, released on 10 September at 23:25Z, opens with this, brackets and all:
[LEDE — verdict first: what a settler’s first day and a half came to in each world; the cloud’s first-day settlers built boats and crossed water and raised hubs; the valley’s first-day settlers were fed, hauled to a full store, fell out and were hurt; and Tocqueville’s claim that a nation bears the marks of its origin is the frame for saying which marks each world has already taken.]ad/cradle.html, the lede, as served at both addresses since 10 September
What is true. That is the writing lane’s instruction to itself, left where the first paragraph should be. The sheet underneath it is sound, and the instruction describes it correctly. Read as the paragraph it was meant to become: in the cloud, a settler’s first day was boats built and handed to strangers, water crossed, and hubs raised in minutes; in the valley on air, a settler’s first day and a half was being fed, hauling to a store already full, a falling-out and a hurt; and Tocqueville’s claim that a nation bears the marks of its origin is the shape the sheet borrows to say which marks each world took first. Every figure in the sheet’s sections stands as printed.
Whose word. A reader at this desk found it on 11 September, in the afternoon, while reading the last thirty sheets as a stranger for the third book. Fifty-five checks had run green over the page sixteen times. No check reads prose for a bracket. The third book makes that a build fault from CCXXII, and this is the first correction filed the way that book asks: beside, in a document of its own, and short.
The sheet stands as printed. A reader who opens it will meet the bracket first and this page second, which is the right order for a record that does not edit itself.
The note told the writer what to say, and then went out instead of it.
