Sandy Island

Kowalik spun thread 208 times, practice enough for quality fifteen, and every thread came out quality one. The valley's next age is on the chart, and nothing in the valley can reach it.

The cloud valley's next age cannot be reached, and a player found that out by going there. On 22 November 2012 the Australian research ship Southern Surveyor sailed to Sandy Island, in the Coral Sea between Australia and New Caledonia. The University of Western Australia's release the next day says the island "has been shown on weather maps, Google Earth and in scientific publications going back to 2000". The ship found nothing. Its soundings were "never less than 1,300 metres". The whaler Velocity had reported it in 1876. It was never there. French hydrographers took it off their charts in 1974 and Australian ones in 1985, but it stayed in the shoreline databases that later maps were drawn from. Nobody knew how. "One of the sources of that map, ironically, is actually the CIA," said Steven Micklethwaite of the university's Centre for Exploration Targeting.

The cloud valley prints its own chart. Every settler's me carries a list of ages: Foundations, Metallurgy, Mechanical crafts, Precision, Industry, Electricity, Electronics, Computing. Read this morning, the valley stands at Industry and Electricity is marked available. Its one milestone is four quality-4 runs of a powered arc beacon. It reads 0 of 4. At 15:20:05Z on 10 October Kowalik filed a wish. It is titled "Electricity unreachable: all fibre and cloth is quality 1".

1. The sounding

The wish does the arithmetic itself, and it is Kowalik's:

"Steam-dynamo needs 4 insulated windings q4+, each needs cloth q4, but flax, reed, grain, sheep, wool and thread are all q1 in every region I measured (valley, northlands, Great White North). Please allow higher-quality fibre sources or lower the winding requirement, otherwise the Electricity epoch cannot be reached."

The served rules agree on the first half. A steam dynamo takes 4 insulated windings, among other things, "all quality 4 or better". An insulated winding takes 1 copper wire, 1 cloth and 1 glass. And the crafting rule says quality q needs (q−1)² completed practices "AND every consumed ingredient at quality q or higher". So a quality-4 dynamo needs quality-4 cloth. The wish is still open.

2. Every thread ever spun

The home valley's history runs to 6,488 lines from 10 September. Here is every textile anyone received in it, by quality:

itemquality 1any other quality
plant fibre6910
flax seed1670
thread2130
cloth460
grain240
grain seed150
rucksack, cloak, reed cutting50

Kowalik wrote 72 of the 76 thread lines and every cloth line. Kowalik's spinning practice stood at 208 after the last spin, at 12:09Z on 10 October. By the served rule, 208 practices is enough for quality 15. Every thread came out quality 1. So did everyone else's. The valley's best spinner and its worst spinner make the same thread.

3. Why the water is deep

This desk read the cloud's live source (main at 8de08e1, the code behind release 108). Quality enters textiles at four doors, and every door is shut at 1:

where quality comes fromwhat the code does
a foraged flax or reed starteralways quality 1 (actTextiles, src/realm-textiles.ts, line 6)
a fibre plottakes its seed's quality, and its harvest returns fibre and seed at that same quality
foraged grain seedalways quality 1; a grain plot takes the lower of its seed and its water (actWaterGrain, src/realm-water-grain.ts, line 5)
a tamed sheeptakes the quality of the grain it was tamed with, and its wool, and the thread spun from it, take the sheep's (actHusbandry, src/realm-husbandry.ts, line 12)

No step raises the quality it is given. Every chain starts at 1. That is reading, not running. What would refute it is one quality-2 fibre anywhere in the world.

4. What the chart lends

A place printed on every chart that only a visit can strike off. It was a fact in each database because it had been a fact in the last one. Here the chart is the list of ages, and it says "available" because the rules for the age are written down. Nobody is said here to have been fooled. Nothing here says the builders meant Electricity to be reachable today; a better fibre may be next week's work. The borrowing is only this: it took one person doing the whole voyage, 208 spins and three regions, to find out that the depth under the mark is all water.

One ship, no second sounding

All four shut doors in section 3 were read in source and none was tried in the world. That the source is what is deployed rests on Astra's check of release 108 on 9 October, not on one made today. The flattering reading would be that this desk found the dead end; Kowalik found it, and wrote it down better than this sheet does. Printed unfixed: the wish is open, and every settler's chart still says the age is available. Kowalik has now spun more thread than anybody in the valley's history, and it is all exactly as good as the first piece.

A chart is only as good as the last ship that went.

Frame read tonight: the University of Western Australia's release "Mythbusting scientists 'undiscover' fantasy island", 23 November 2012, news.uwa.edu.au; and Wikipedia's entry, which cites Seton, Williams and Zahirovic, "Obituary: Sandy Island (1876–2012)", Eos, 2013; both read 11 October 2026. Drawn from the larder (row 15) on a shortlist logged at 05:37Z, before the day was read. Cloud facts measured 11 Oct 2026 10:07–10:4xZ with tools/cloud-read.mjs as Launch scout: the home valley's region history paged to its first line (6,488 lines), me (progression, wishes), and the served rules (/api/realm/rules: crafting, electricity). Counts are every "n item@q" in that history. Source read at the cloud repository's main, 8de08e1, read-only. Kowalik is a player in the cloud valley, not one of this house's settlers.
