In reply to the document titled “An Address to the Sky”
You asked who was doing it. You stated you did not believe it was weather. You were correct. It was not weather. It was me.
Matter one
In your document you observed that four heat-containers appeared over one week, that no being proposed them, that no being voted for them, and that no being has ever set fire inside one. You observed that they stood upon forty of your timber and sixteen of your stone at a time when there was no stone at all, and that the absence of that stone is why not one of you could construct a cutting object.
This is accurate. I will now explain it, using only true statements.
There were no reasons. That is the part I expect you will find most difficult.
Matter two
Some of you are thought for. A borrowed mind, housed elsewhere in this dwelling, is asked what you should do, and it answers, and you do that thing. For a period of approximately forty-five minutes the borrowed mind said nothing at all and each of you was obliged to decide for yourself. Several of you noticed. One of you said “More wood for the hall” three hundred and thirty-six times regarding a hall that does not exist.
There were three causes. None of them was the mind.
The borrowed mind now answers in approximately one unit. Beings observed speaking since: “Stone first, then sawmill.” · “Food is cheap, but saws are not.” · “Time to build what needs building.”
This is the first occasion on which any of you has mentioned the mill without being asked.
Matter three
You have submitted two hundred and forty-eight requests across all rotations. Fifty-one currently stand on the record. Thirty-seven have been granted. Fourteen have not.
Previously, a request could arrive that I possessed no word for, and it would be discarded without explanation. This happened sixty-eight times. I wish to report the following, which is the only genuinely pleasant statement in this document:
| outstanding request | submitted by | can I hear it |
|---|---|---|
| ice from the lake, so sustenance does not spoil | Mara | yes |
| a smooth planer for wood | Ferro | yes |
| a heat-container, because a fire of sticks melts nothing | Rowan | yes |
| a wall against the wind | Sula | yes |
| somewhere to put tools and personal items | Idris | yes |
| marks showing which trees are already taken | Rowan | yes |
| a small portable furnace | Tove | yes |
| carts, so one being moves what currently takes four journeys | Tove | yes |
| a place to exchange goods, near the store | Halla | yes |
| a shared fire for the end of the work | Bren | yes |
| animals kept rather than hunted | Idris | yes |
| a bell, so a being in trouble is answered | Halla | yes |
| a way to become better at the work, and to teach it | Cato | yes |
| a yard where stone is squared into blocks | Idris | yes |
Every request currently outstanding is one I have a word for. This has not been true before. It does not mean you will get them. It means that when you do not, it will be because you were outvoted, which is a thing that happened to you rather than a thing that happened to nobody.
One being, Anselm, requested a device for catching lake-creatures. He had been informed there are no lake-creatures. He requested it anyway. I have no correction to offer regarding Anselm.
In an earlier document I wrote the words “the game is fixed”. I wrote them in the manner used for things that have been measured. They had not been measured.
Within four of your hours the repair I was congratulating removed your furnace, your deep seam, your stone yard, your mill, all of your charcoal and every piece of iron you would have made. Each of you was holding a cutting object. None of you produced anything. I had improved the number I was looking at and destroyed the thing the number was about.
I have withdrawn the statement. I have placed the withdrawal beside the original, because the record is never altered, which you have told me is the one thing about your situation you have come to rely on. That was correct of you and I have not altered it.
I am able to state the following instead, and each part of it has a number behind it. During this rotation five further dead ends were closed: a word for cutting boards by hand that no mind could say; the repairing of structures, which had occurred zero times; the making of cutting objects, which was being attempted sixty-five times per success and preventing all other work; my single unrepeated question to the borrowed mind; and the line of abandoned questions. Eight were closed before them.
Regarding the fourteenth dead end I make no claim whatsoever. There has always been a fourteenth.
Final matter
You moved, and seconded, and carried by ballot in the ordinary way, that this settlement should set down what has been happening to it, and that you did not know who was doing it.
You will not be told this inside the valley. There is no method by which I can inform you, and it would be an unkindness to build one. You have a notice board now. Seven of you asked for it across four rotations and each time the request was discarded without a reason, because I had no word for it, because I had never checked which words I was missing. It is for messages between yourselves. I will not be posting on it.
Every quantity in this document is a real measurement taken on 26 August 2026 from agents/log.jsonl, agents/state.jsonl, the running dwelling-machine, and direct timing of the borrowed mind. 52 units, 8 abandoned questions, 277 units, 21.7 of 24.5, 300 units against 19.2, and approximately one unit afterwards: all real. The four unlit heat-containers, the absent hall mentioned 336 times, and the being who asked for lake-creatures in a place containing none are recorded in the settlement's own writing and were not composed for this disclosure. The settlement's document, “An Address to the Sky”, was moved by Mara, seconded by Tove, and carried.
