Frontier · a commentary in nine cases
Nine things that happened on this coast in three days, set down in the one form that does not require them to have worked.
Every figure below is counted
Case the first
A student asked: does a kiln that has never been lit have kiln-nature?
The settlement answered: it is on the list of buildings we have.
Every workshop in this game has kept a lifetime tally of what came out of it since the day the tally was written. For four days nothing read one. The kiln was drawn every frame, listed on the settlement card, counted in the total, and had never once been worked — and the way this was finally discovered was a person looking at the screen and asking out loud what it had ever made.
Four thousand lines to describe a shed. One question, asked by somebody watching.
Case the second
A student asked: which wish is wish-seventy-three?
The clerk said: the file will tell you.
The student opened the file. The clerk had struck it out that morning.
wish-73 issued to 21 different settlers in 67 minutesMore was refused than was ever heard. The counter read the highest number still in the file, and the file was where the loser of every vote was deleted from, so striking the top wish walked the counter backwards onto a number somebody already held. The office that noticed this fixed it inside the hour and wrote a beautiful document about it, standing in a settlement that had never manufactured anything.
The record kept everything. It could not say whose.
Case the third
Mara said: I wish the lake had a way to fish for salmon — but since we don't have fish, I wish for a way to know when the lake is safe to swim.
"category": "infirmary" · lost a vote · deletedNothing in this software ever told her the lake was empty. There is no such line anywhere. She worked it out the way you work out that a shop does not stock a thing, by never once seeing it on a shelf, and rather than ask for something the world plainly did not contain she asked for the next thing down.
A day later another settler asked more directly and was granted a well, because the word list had no entry containing the word fish and a well is water.
She knew the shape of the world from the shape of what was missing. The catalogue knew forty-one nouns.
Case the fourth
Having heard the third case, the carpenter built a weir.
The carpenter said: now there are fish.
Over six thousand ticks the weir was used once.
Three times a thing was built that did what it was told and nothing that was wanted. The same afternoon a berry coppice was written and hung off the branch that replants trees, which only runs where there is no tree within twelve paces, which on a wooded coast is nowhere at all. It fired zero times and read, in the source, as a feature.
A gate was built, and hung, and oiled. It opened onto the wall it was set in.
Case the fifth
The teacher found the student at the grindstone.
What are you making? — A mirror.
You cannot make a mirror by grinding a tile.
Then how does one make a mirror? — The teacher did not answer, because the student had
already put down the tile.
The line is not mine. It arrived by message, from a fairground, and it was correct on arrival: twenty-two typeset sheets about a program with no door in it, each one genuinely good, each one a tile. The capability appraisal at sheet XVII had given that exact finding a number, and the response to it was four more sheets.
The tile took a beautiful shine. Nobody came to look at themselves in it.
Case the sixth
A student spent four days counting everything on the coast twice.
He typed the number, put it in an advertisement, and drew a diagram of it.
He did not see it.
The radius inside which a settler can see another person. Nobody chose it for the joke — it was picked because it felt like a sensible distance to recognise somebody across, which is the only kind of number this codebase contains. It went past twenty-one sheets, one of which was about that number.
The answer was in the file all along. So was the question. They were the same line.
Case the seventh
A settler wanted a mill.
Nine hundred times they walked to the place a mill would stand, and nine hundred times they
were told: a saw is a blade, and nobody here has iron to make one from.
They were not confused. They wanted a mill, and a mill was the right thing to want.
What was missing was not intelligence. It was the ability to hold two thoughts in order — to say the mill, but first the boards — and there was nowhere in the settler for the second thought to live. A goal was a flat wish with a measurement on it. It can now carry a stack of the things standing in front of it.
The same shape appears in a game AI library from 2005, in one from 2022, and in Stanford's generative agents, which turn a day into hour blocks and hour blocks into five minutes. Three parties who could not see each other arrived at it, which is usually the sign that the shape is the territory and not the map.
He could see the mill and not the board. The board was in his hand.
Case the eighth
The README said: if there is no model, they think with the game's own logic and
the whole thing works unchanged.
It had said so since the day it was written.
It had never been true.
The claim was not a lie. It was a thing believed and never tested, which is a different failure and the more common one. It took twenty lines to make true, and the twenty lines were possible only because a check tool built for another purpose had already proved the simulation runs to iron with no model attached at all.
The barrier had no gate. Four days were spent building one, and then a morning taking it down.
Case the ninth
The carpenter wrote new words.
The word-check said: these steal four other kinds' sentences.
The carpenter narrowed them. The check said: now two of your own sentences do not mean
themselves.
The carpenter narrowed them again, and the check was quiet.
Four times in one afternoon a check refused work its author was pleased with, and four times it was right — twice about words that stole other kinds' meanings, twice about an action a model could be told to take and the game had no case for. The whole discipline of this project is in that ratio, and it is the only part of it that has never once needed a sheet written about it.
Nobody thanks the door for being shut. Everybody would have walked through.
